How To Build Traffic To Your Blog

With the growing interest in blogging as a means of online promotion and branding, a lot of marketers are starting blogs to promote their opinions, products, books and services.
But a blog is like a website. "Write and they will come" isn't exactly a magic formula to bring in traffic by the boatload.
If you need to promote your website in order to build traffic to it, you need to promote your blog as well.
Here are some ways you can become a well-read and influential blogger.

1. Write Posts That People Will Want To Read

This should be common sense, but many marketers tend to forget that their readers are real people and that you need to use the principles of online copywriting to make your headlines and copy interesting to your readers.
If you write posts that people enjoy reading, they will reward you by returning to your blog regularly.
Make your posts conversational, pithy and topical. Keep them short and stick to one topic per post.
Write often and regularly so that both readers and search engines visit your blog more often.

2. Optimize Your Posts for Search Engines

I cover this topic in detail in my article on "Search Engine Optimization For Blogs"
But here are the most important rules to follow to get your posts listed for keywords of your choice.
  • Make sure your blog URL contains the primary keyword you want to optimize for
  • Use your primary keywords in the title of your post
  • Use your secondary keywords in the body of your post
  • Use your keywords in the anchor text of links in the body of your posts

3. Submit Your Blog and RSS Feed To Directories

If you publish a blog you should submit your blog and RSS feed to big directories like Yahoo and Dmoz, as well as the numerous blog directories and search engines.
Here is the best list I've found of places to submit your feed or blog, compiled by Luigi Canali De Rossi, who writes under the pseudonym Robin Good.

4. Ping The Blog Services

There are a number of services designed specifically for tracking and connecting blogs. By sending a small ping to each service you let them know you've updated your blog so they can come check you out.
Bookmark the Ping-O-Matic ping results page so you can visit it and quickly ping a number of services with a single click.

5. Build Links To Your Blog

I recommend the methods here as the best ways to get links pointing to your blog.
  • Link to your blog from each page on your main website
  • Trackback to other blogs in your posts
  • Post legitimate comments on other blogs with related topics
  • Offer to exchange links with other similarly themed blogs and websites

6. Edit Your Blog Posts Into Articles

One of the best methods for promoting your website is to write articles and submit them to article directories.
The suggestion for extending this to edit your blog posts into articles and submit them to directories came from the coach at "Explode Blog Traffic" who also has other noteworthy suggestions at his blog.

7. Create Buzz About Your Blog

Creating a buzz about your blog posts and topic in the local and online media will give your marketing a viral component.
  • Create a controversy around your blog or it's topic.
  • Distribute bumper stickers or other merchandise with your blog's URL and tagline.
  • Write a press release about something newsworthy and tie it in with your blog topic.

8. Capture Subscribers By Email

It may seem strange for a blogger to send out updates by email, but email is still the #1 choice of most people who want to receive news and information.
Using a free service like Feedburner to manage your subscriptions is easy and it allows your subscribers to manage all their subscriptions from one interface.
However, if you want more control over your list and don't mind mailing out the updates yourself, you can use an autoresponder system to capture and follow-up with subscribers.
These tips should give you a good start to building your blog traffic.

HOW DO I GET MORE TRAFFIC TO MY BLOG?

Venthans Answer:Let me spend some time answering your question because it's one of the top queries I get from other bloggers, particularly after listening to one of my Crasy Stuffs Blog...
First off, the core answer is actually pretty easy: the best way to generate traffic for your blog is to reframe the question. Instead of asking "how to I get more visitors to my site?" you need to be asking the question "how do I become part of the blogosphere discussion?"
Bloggers that don't get this crucial point end up being tiny islands in a very big ocean. Some of them can gain a readership by being phenomenally good or astonishingly prolific, but that's a very tough path to travel and for most ends up being the blogosphere equivalent of the old Web site complaint of "I've built it, but no-one's come to visit."
Instead, you need to get involved! Regardless of your topic, I bet there are already other people blogging about the same issues, thoughts and ideas, even if you don't agree with them. Join their conversation -- on their territory -- and you'll be leaving your island and joining the party.
Here's an easy tip that I tell my clients: two days a week spend an hour writing one thoughtful and cogent article that's relevant to your target readership. Imagine you're going to be having it picked up and published in one of the key trade publications in your marketplace. Good grammar, good spelling, coherent sentences, and a valuable point or insight are all important. It doesn't have to be perfect, but I promise you, the better you write, the more your potential customers, clients, partners and investors will be impressed.
The other three days of the week? Spend the same amount of time and effort each of these other days, but this time find other blogs that are in your market space and add thoughtful comments to their discussions. Sometimes, when appropriate, link back to your own articles, but other times add your own comments just to participate in the ongoing discussion and, yes, gain some visibility in your marketspace.
Over time you'll gain a reputation as a credible expert and people will start checking out your blog to see what you have to say. Then you'll have gained traffic and visibility in your market segment, which is where it's most important anyway.
I spend a fair amount of my time scanning both blog and news headlines and then popping onto other weblogs and adding my two cents. It's fun, rewarding, and helps me gain visibility in a way that writing even the best darn blog could never accomplish.

Google AdSense Tips

Subsequent to my AdSense items from yesterday today are a few random tips and tips for Google AdSense.
Again, I would like to preface that these tips are not a panacea and always and everywhere to work. One must also test here are first and possibly the best looking out for themselves.
If you have more tips, I would be glad if you write this in the comments.
Google AdSense Tips
AdSense not hide in column
AdSense ads will be paid not to Views, but for clicks. It is therefore important that as the ads each visitor consciously perceived.
So hiding your AdSense blocks on your right side or bottom, but builds the code where it is seen. The beginning and the end of contributions has to me always works well.
first ad with highest click rates
According to Google the ads with the highest click rates in the first occurring in the code are put AdSense block.
This block was the most prominently placed AdSense unit and should not be hiding somewhere right in the column.
Adsense in Content
Very well worked for me However, the incorporation of AdSense blocks situated works in posts. You can either do it by hand with the plugin “AdSense Deluxe” or eg automatically with the plugin “AdSense Injection”.
I use the former, since one has to simply hand over control of the position.
Up to 3 AdSense ads
Google allows up to 3 AdSense text ad units per page. If you have enough text in its content, this should also use and place one ad in the beginning, middle and end of his contributions.
If you have only short news articles, you should not annoy his readers, and only 2 or an AdSense block installed.
Link Color
For most blogs and websites blue for the AdSense links will work best. Blue is the color of a trained link for “normal” Internet users.
AdSense Templates
Provided by Google AdSense templates are not recommended. Try to match the ads to the layout of your blog or your site so that the AdSense blocks can not be recognized from the very corner of my eye as advertising.
1 item = one topic
Limited per you post on a topic as possible. The more focused the article is more appropriate to the AdSense ads are.
Define Analysis Area
In this context it is also important to the analysis of the page for the Google AdSense Crawler limit.
With the commands “<- google_ad_section_start -> and <- google_ad_section_end ->” Google says that only the text between them are crucial for the ads.
You can either make in his WordPress theme itself or as the WordPress plugin wpSEO * use these tags automatically sets before and after the article text.
bad block ads
Not all ads in Google AdSense blocks are really serious. Therefore, one should consider whether to filter out certain ads domains.
There are in the Google AdSense account is an option. A list of dubious ads find for example here, and I got blocked only part of it. But you have to yourself that it blocks all those URLs.
Many bloggers, including I myself, found that by this filtering and the click prices have risen. So it’s worth something “clean up”.
Watch Show
You should also see time at your recent articles, the ads. Do many different ads or the ads are repeated often? Or dive even more on just 1 or 2 ads in a 4 ad block.
This may mean that this subject / these keywords are hardly advertisers. So rather put the article topics and keywords that bring more ads and therefore more competition and higher click prices.
View channels use
It is very important to use a channel for each ad. This simply means that you can take the statistics in Google AdSense account for the different channels and see it separately for each ad. In contrast, a comparison of each ad is hardly possible.
Text ads are more effective than image ads
Most bloggers report that they are clear in text ads, more clicks than AdSense image ads.
I can only confirm. So watch out for the production of ads to click “text only ads.
If anyone has any other experience, I am pleased with a comment.
More traffic = more clicks?
More traffic is of course always a good thing first. Is it possible to keep the click rate, then of course, increase the clicks on AdSense.
However, traffic does not equal traffic. Blogt you through popular and (I may say so) adult themes, then I suppose you get a lot of traffic, but the own click prices (and certainly the reputation of their own blogs) suffer.
Basically, but more traffic is also good for the AdSense revenue.
AdSense ads are immediately visible
Also falling back to the “do not hide advertising”. When the first AdSense unit is immediately seen after loading the page, also heard the click opportunities.
As few other links
I have even noticed this firsthand. The more other links are available, the lower in general, the CTR of the AdSense ads.
Before I had my new layout, my CTR was almost twice as high as now. Now I have already significantly more links and visitors so that more alternatives.
Therefore, so-called “AdSense Themes including optimized to have just as few links in the header.
The visitor should perceive the AdSense links as possible first.
